The Druk Wangyel Tshechu is a relatively recent addition to Bhutan’s festival calendar. It takes place on December 13th at the Druk Wangyel Lhakhang Festival Ground located at Dochula Pass, around 22km from the capital city of Thimphu. The Druk Wangyel Lhakhang was built over a period of four years (2004–2008) under the vision and patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Azhi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck after the 2003 incident in Bhutan. The Lhakhang honors the courageous service of the Fourth King, who personally led the troops against the insurgents, as well as the regular Armed Forces of the country. Similarly, this Tschechu was established in 2011, and it has been carried out continuously to this day.

The Druk Wangyel Tshechu stands out among Bhutanese festivals due to its intimate connection with the armed forces. The festival is a tribute to the gallant soldiers who safeguard the kingdom’s sovereignty and peace. Against the backdrop of Dochula’s memorial chortens, the festival becomes a symbolic expression of gratitude for the sacrifices made by the military when the country was in need.

The festival features a series of performances showcasing historical achievements and great leadership. On top of that, the mask dances are all performed by the Royal Bhutan Army, and they have profound messages to convey. In addition to honoring the armed forces, the Druk Wangyel Tshechu also pays homage to the wise leadership of our Great Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

The Druk Wangyel Festival is not only a traditional treat but also proves a boon for local businesses, especially small shopkeepers who cater to the culinary needs of festival goers as the cool breeze blows through Dochula Pass. They serve the best porridge, savory dumplings, and other various items, helping the visitors beat the chilly weather. The influx of tourists taking the opportunity to warm up to delicious food creates a bustling market where entrepreneurial spirit thrives, demonstrating the potential of Bhutanese small businesses to resist exposure.

These vendors not only feed the festival attendees but also contribute to the local economy, and therefore the Druk Wangyel Festival enhances local commerce and encourages community and entrepreneurial spirit in the hilly terrain of the stunning Dochula. Travelers find themselves welcomed by warm smiles and open hearts as they engage with locals, sharing stories and experiences.
